Investing in a new HVAC system can be nerve-wracking. Your system will serve your home for the next ten years or longer. If you’re not knowledgeable about HVAC  systems, it feels like you’re flying blind.

Making the right decision on such a large purchase can cause butterflies for anyone. At Family Heating & Cooling, our goal is to educate our customers. We want to make sure you feel completely confident in choosing the perfect system for your home. That’s why we believe that every single installation starts with you, the homeowner.

We start every replacement consultation with a simple discussion about your needs. If your current system is not functional, we know you need an affordable replacement quickly. Still, it’s important to consider your family’s comfort and what hasn’t been working with your current system. Here are some questions we’ll ask before we begin:

  • Have you done any major renovations in the last few years, or are you planning to renovate or finish out unused spaces soon?

  • Are there hot or cold spots in your home?

  • Is indoor humidity an issue?

  • Does anyone suffer from allergies?

  • Have you considered zoning your home?

  • Do you have smart home technology, or are you interested in upgrading your thermostat?

  • Was your previous system especially noisy?

We’ll provide you with an estimate for your new HVAC system. Once you schedule your installation, we’ll stay in touch with you through the entire process.

What to Expect and What you May Not Know

WHAT EQUIPMENT AM I ACTUALLY BUYING WITH A REPLACEMENT

Unless you’re an HVAC whiz, you likely aren’t familiar with all of the components or terminology. If you feel like your HVAC contractor is speaking in foreign tongues, don’t worry! We’ll be sure to explain every detail until you feel comfortable.

During an installation, you may need to purchase just one piece of a system, or you may have all the components included in your project. So it’s important to understand every part of the Heating and Air Conditioning system. Here are the principal components and terminology you should know:

Evaporator Coil (also known as the evaporator or indoor coil) – The indoor side of your air conditioner is called the evaporator coil. Most homes have an evaporator coil right on top of the furnace. Or, if there’s no furnace, there will be an evaporator coil inside a piece of equipment called an air handler, this is also true with a heat pump. The evaporator coil is where very cold refrigerant travels through. Evaporator coils also contain a device called an expansion valve. The expansion valve keeps your coil at the necessary cool temperatures.

Condensing Unit (also referred to as a condenser, outdoor unit, or simply air conditioner) – The condensing unit is the big metal box that sits outside your home. The condensing unit builds pressure in the system and helps to cool the refrigerant. The condensing unit has several components that help with this, including a coil, a fan, and a compressor. The coil and fan help cool refrigerant, while the compressor helps build pressure.

Furnace - The furnace can be fueled by either natural gas, propane, or oil. Your furnace is responsible for heating your home. It also houses the blower or fan motor which moves the air through the ductwork.

Heat Pump - The heat pump unit is the big metal box that sits outside your home. Much like condensing unit builds pressure in the system and helps to cool the refrigerant a heat pump can reverse that cycle and produce heating for the home.

Other Components in an HVAC System –

  • Piping for refrigerant that travels between the condensing unit and evaporator coil.

  • Ductwork which carries air around your home.

  • Blower (or indoor fan) which helps airflow through the ductwork. The indoor fan is normally located inside a furnace or an air handler.

  • A thermostat that sends on and off signals to your condensing unit and blower.

  • Air Cleaners or Furnace Filters

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE SELECTING A NEW HVAC UNIT

Here are a few things to consider when you’re ready to replace your heating and cooling system:

  • Installer – Clean workmanship is essential to the long-term operation of a new air conditioner. A shoddy installation can cause poor performance and avoidable repairs. Even the most premium equipment cannot compensate for an installation job done poorly.  Choose a reputable HVAC contractor to install your equipment.

  • Whole System or Just One Piece – Which part of your system are you looking to replace? Now might be a good time to evaluate if other pieces in your system require replacement, as there are often great incentives to purchase a full system. Another piece of info important to homeowners: most new equipment uses the refrigerant type called R-410A sometimes referred to as Puron. If your existing system uses R-22 refrigerant (also known as Freon), it won’t be compatible with an R-410A system. Due to federal regulations, equipment compatible with R-22 can no longer be sold. So, replacing one piece of your system may lead to replacing others.

  • Features – There has been a lot of innovation within the cooling industry, and HVAC systems can do a lot more these days. Are you interested in a high-efficiency unit? What about systems that offer zoning in your home? Or, does the noise from your current air conditioner keep you awake at night? Family Heating and Cooling carry a wide variety of HVAC products. So, we can help you find a system that meets YOUR needs!

  • How about a heat pump? – Air conditioners are exactly that: cooling-only equipment. But have you heard about heat pumps? A heat pump is a combination unit that provides both cooling and heating. Heat pumps are ideal for areas where natural gas is unavailable or maybe you are trying to get away from the high cost of heating oil.

  • Ductless Mini-Splits -  These are a great and ultra-energy-efficient way to heat and cool any space. With features such as independent temperature control, super low operating costs, and extremally low sound levels, a ductless system is a perfect fit for any home.

  • Brand – How important is a brand name to you? Family Heating & Cooling offers several brands to meet your needs.

  • Budget – Consider your spending limit for your air conditioner installation. Depending on the size of your project, it could be thousands of dollars. Luckily, Family Heating & Cooling offers financing for our customers, which will help break down the cost of your HVAC installation into small monthly payments.
